Even though Vertigo is gone, the Sandman Universe is still kicking ass, returning to John Constantine and bringing us a new Hellblazer comic book series. The Sandman Universe Presents Hellblazer is a one-shot reintroducing the charming asshole street magician – and one of the most powerful sorcerers in the universe. Constantine’s first appearance was in Alan Moore and Rick Veitch’s Swamp Thing, but he quickly migrated to Vertigo to be an integral part in Neil Gaiman and company’s original run of Sandman comics.
This late October one-shot will be written by The Dreaming’s Simon Spurrier, with art from Green Arrow’s Marcio Takara, and followed by a John Constantine, Hellblazer ongoing series from Spurrier and Aaron Campbell (Infidel).
“Hellblazer’s the one title I’ve always aspired to write. Ever since John Constantine slunk from Alan Moore’s brain into Swamp Thing, dropping secrets like grenades, bewildering vegetables, and spinning mysteries, I’ve been drawn to his misadventures with eerie gravity. John Constantine is the cynic’s magician: a man of selfish drives and cataclysmic self-knowledge, who tries to do the right thing in spite of himself, in spite of the cost, in spite of the vile and violent world he occupies. He may not be the hero we need, but he’s definitely the bastard we deserve. In this new era, everything is different. Everyone and everything he loved and knew is dead or despises him. Alone, angry, older, and wiser, he beholds a world that is clearly going insane. The shadows are deeper than ever. So, he does what he does. He breathes smoke. He grins to himself. And he goes to work”, said Spurrier.
We expect the first issue of the new Hellblazer comic book series the end of November – when we will also see new story arcs for the four Sandman Universe ongoings. We hope you are as excited as we are.
