Some details of Amazon’s secretive Lord of the Rings series are finally coming out!

The project, born of a massive, nine-figure deal struck with the Tolkien estate, will be realized in eight seasons – which is now, apparently, the industry standard run for big-budget epic fantasy series. However, other than some minor information regarding the writing team, not much is really known about the production and creative direction the project will take.

That said, it’s hardly cause for alarm, as Amazon has proven itself as more than capable of running fantasy, as evidenced by the success of their recent Good Omens series, an adaptation of the renowned Pratchett/Gaiman novel.

Set to start production in 2020, the project will be the first time in over five years that Tolkien’s world and lore will be featured in major media, with the last being 2014’s The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. It will detail the ‘Second Age’ in the Tolkien mythos, the time when the fabled Rings of Power were first forged.

Supposedly, young Australian actress Markella Kavenagh (The Picnic at Hanging Rock) is in talks with Amazon to play a character so far known only as ‘Tyra’. No further details seem forthcoming on the topic at this time, as both Amazon and the actress’ reps are quiet on the matter.

While she is the first to come up, she will likely not be the last, as Amazon leveraged its global presence to set up casting over three continents, opening up a potentially massive pool of talent to draw from.

Further, judging from the decision to cast, as of right now, a relatively unknown actress, it’s quite possible that the series will, much like Game of Thrones, aim its spotlight on lesser-known talent and give the industry another always-appreciated booster shot.

Who else would you like to see in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series?
